Guest speaker: Benjamin R. Barber: “If Mayors Ruled the World”
(Political theorist, City University of New York)

Introduction by Eric Corijn (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)

Cosmopolis has invited Benjamin R. Barber, the American political theorist, for the next lunch seminar at the VUB on Wednesday 19 February.
In 1996 Barber, the American political theorist who was once an adviser to Bill Clinton,  became world famous for his book Jihad vs. McWorld in which he wrote that organisations such as the UN, the IMF and the World Bank are paralysed by the sovereignty of their member states. Barber went in search of alternative building blocks for global governance. And it soon became clear that the city is the ideal candidate. ‘The city is the answer to the difficult question of whether a global form of democracy still exists.’ The latter is what Barber’s most recent book If Mayors Ruled the World is all about.
Benjamin R. Barber will be presenting the book after an introduction by Eric Corijn (Cosmopolis, Vrije Universiteit Brussel).
