Which Future for Representative Democracy? The Challenge of the Recent Protest Movements

Abstract: There are divergent interpretations of the recent protest movements in liberal democratic societies. Some theorists argue that they signify a rejection of representative democracy and a call for a new type of ‘presentist democracy.’ Chantal Mouffe will argue that what they reveal is the need for an agonistic debate that would allow for a radicalization, not rejection of representative institutions.
