Developing, implementing and supporting education is no easy subject matter. That’s why the VUB offers a wide range of support to help you to optimally fulfill these responsibilities:

“The content of the day was often shaped by the questions from the group. I thought that was great, we were able to choose the themes for ourselves.”

Training for teaching assistants

Are you a postdoc with one or more teaching responsibilities? Then this training might be for you!

Join us for this one-day training course. Questions covered include “How do I prepare a lesson?”, “What are areas for particular attention during the class itself?”, “How do I coach students?”. The focus is on sharing experiences and on your personal teaching approach.

“For me, the application and personal exercises were the most interesting part.” A participant in the session on Stimulating active learning in large groups with Poll Everywhere

Short trainings and info-sessions

These sessions are available for all teaching staff. The length of the sessions varies from one hour to a half day.

Each session covers a specific educational theme, ranging from teaching to education technology and policy-related topics.

A suitable approach will be chosen depending on the goals. This could be an information session or a workshop, as well as a follow-up session to further monitor progress and to share experiences. There are also lunch sessions during which colleagues share good practices and inspiration.

Most of the sessions are in Dutch. Requests for sessions in English will be considered if the demand is high. Please contact lrn@vub.be

Science outreach

We offer a variety of specific initiatives and support for bridging the gap between researcher and society:

  • Are you interested in writing a popular scientific article? Then our science blog “wtnschp.be” is certainly for you. You can count on support from our editorial team;
  • Would you prefer direct contact with the general public or would you rather inspire the next generation of researchers? Then you'll surely find what you are looking for amongst the various platforms available, with initiatives such as the PhD Cup, Science Festival, Bright Club Brussels or the VUB Children's University. As part of some of our initiatives, we provide workshops or direct support;
  • The Science Outreach office is also happy to provide advice on your own outreach initiative. You can contact us here;

In addition (and independent of specific initiatives), you can get inspiration to communicate with impact via diverse media channels, such as communication through press and social mediaThese courses are non-research specific, taught in Dutch, aimed towards all VUB staff and will be scheduled by our VUB-expertise centre MarCom. Requests for English sessions will be considered if there is a sufficient demand. E-mail us.

Economic valorization of research

Do you dream of starting your own spin-off?

During the first semester, you can take two interactive introductory courses on entrepreneurship with a focus on innovation and technology:

  • The Starter Seminars are primarily focused towards VUB Master and PhD students, as well as towards senior researchers who are interested in the link between research and entrepreneurship;
  • The Advanced Starter Seminars are for those who have a basic background in business management, or who have (concrete) plans for launching their own start-up.

These intensive courses consist of a series of evening seminars covering various basic principles of entrepreneurship, such as drawing up a business plan, marketing and innovative forms of financing. In addition, the seminars will invite high-level professionals to share their knowledge and expertise and you will have the opportunity to have your own project evaluated by them.

Well-being and career

As a postdoc, building your career often goes hand-in-hand with networking and exploring your options within the academic world and beyond. Focusing on your career and awareness of your own potential is good for your motivation and confidence. As a university, we therefore want to encourage young researchers to actively develop their careers and well-being.

Well-being

Like our society, our work context is constantly in motion. How can we stay strong and resilient in the face of all this change? The training ‘Staying resilient in rapidly changing circumstances’ helps you identify the warning signs of stress and learn how to talk about this with your supervisor and colleagues.

In addition, there are initiatives specifically designed for young researchers, such as the Mindfulness course, a series of eight two-hour sessions in which you will learn a working method for a mindful approach to combating stress, including group exercises and the opportunity to share experiences. There is also the workshop 'From conflict to resolution' which will show you how to best handle conflicts.

As VUB-community, we also pay extra attention to Gender and diversity. So make sure to keep an eye out for lectures and events, such as Gender Week, via VUB events calendar.

Career

Would you like to do some thinking about your career? The two-day training ‘In the driver’s seat of your own career’ for all VUB staff members will help you to identify your talents and learn what acts as a source of energy for you, and what doesn't. You will then be encouraged to more clearly formulate your career expectations and dreams, and to consider what it would take to make them a reality.

Also, be sure to check the career events for young researchers, including job fairs, testimonials and workshops. View upcoming events here under 'Career development'.

And don't forget that your talents and skills are highly applicable in the non-academic job market as well! We therefore warmly encourage all young researchers to develop a strong set of transferable skills, such as leadership, coaching and management.

Transferable skills

As a postdoc, you will rapidly gain independence in your research, and you will gradually be expected to supervise young researchers in their projects as well. These are some of the reasons why, at the VUB, we also want to help you develop transferable skills such as networking and leadership.

Networking, leadership and organisation

  • To help you find your way in the academic network and to further develop your interpersonal skills, we organise courses for young researchers on 'Networking skills' and 'Getting things done with others';

  • In order to effectively communicate your knowledge and have an impact (in the academic world and beyond), good communication and persuasion skills are essential, which is precisely the focus of the practical, interactive two-day course Leadership for postdocs’.
  • How to coach someone to build their independence? There’s no ‘one size fits all’ formula for being a good mentor for others – but the 2-day course ‘Coaching for growth’ will give you a wide range of tools for ‘non-directive coaching’.

  • There’s also the workshop 'From conflict to resolution' that examines the best approach to conflicts.
  • How to tackle that (ever-growing) to-do list? Learn new tips and tricks, for example, with the course 'Grow your future effectiveness'.

These initiatives (and more) can be found here as soon as sessions are scheduled. Check it regularly to discover newly planned sessions.

Advising PhD candidates

Clear expectations on both sides are the key to smooth relations between the supervisor and the PhD candidate. But what exactly are your rights and obligations as a supervisor? What style of guidance is the best fit for both of you? How should you handle difficult situations?

In order to answer these questions, the VUB and ULB jointly organise:

  • The two-day supervisor training, based on scientific insights into the supervisor-PhD candidate relationship. This training takes place on two nonconsecutive days in the second semester.
  • The Round table for PhD supervisors, an interactive discussion forum with a panel of experts on various topics that are introduced by supervisors themselves, followed by co-creation sessions to establish guidelines on the subject.
  • Intervision sessions in which personal cases can be discussed confidentially. A number of opportunities for these sessions will be scheduled in the second semester.
    • Next edition: 4/02/2019 (Campus Etterbeek) or 25/04/2019 (ULB), 30/04/2019 (ULB). Registration opens soon. Read more about the format.
