Master of Science in Biomolecular Sciences

Biomolecular Sciences is a two-year scientific program that focuses on the biochemical unity that underlies the biological diversity. Biomolecular Science is a rapidly developing discipline in modern life science. It stands at the crossroads of chemical, biological, physical and computational sciences and focuses on the molecular understanding of cellular function. Anticipating this evolution, this Master program will focus on the understanding of cellular processes, biological molecules and their interactions.

The program of the first year is composed of 4 modules, all of which have to be followed.
- Protein Structure and Function (3x5 ECTS)
- Applied Immunology (3x5 ECTS)
- Advanced Molecular Biology (4x5 ECTS)
- Bioinformatics (2x5 ECTS)

The program of the second year pays much attention to the acquisition of research competences. The program consists of three modules:
- Elective courses (4x5 ECTS)
- Master Proof (30 ECTS)
- Research Communication and Management (10 ECTS)

Subdomain Protein Structure and Function

The courses are at advanced level and consist of 26 class hours and 6 days of practical training. The practical trainings link up with the advanced courses and will take place in the research labs under the guidance of experienced postdocs.

Research Competences

In this part, the competences and skills needed to perform research in a later career are trained under the supervision of a promotor.

Research Communication and Management can only be chosen after at least 48 ECTS-credits have been acquired. It consists of writing up the results of the master thesis in a publication format, seminars on intellectual property rights, and writing up of a research proposal.

The master thesis can only be started after at least 48 ECTS-credits have been acquired. During the experimental part of the master thesis, students learn to plan and perform experiments and critically interpret the results obtained. They also learn to report both orally and in written, prepare powerpoint presentations and summarize literature data. They learn to present their work in public and answer questions from a jury and the audience. Any topic is potentially acceptable as long as it offers a real contribution to Biomolecular Sciences.
