The model learning track of the European Master of Science in Photonics consists of 120 ECTS:

In the first year of the model learning track:
- 52 ECTS of Compulsory General Courses
- 8 ECTS of Photonics-related Electives

In the second year of the model learning track:
- Compulsory General Courses related to one ‘Mobility Track’ out of five possible tracks
- Photonics-related, Multidisciplinary Electives and optionally Free Electives, related to the chosen mobility track
- A Master Thesis Project (30 ECTS)

Students must select one of these mobility tracks; the selection must always be approved by the faculty before registration:
- Mobility track 1:
Course Package (30 ECTS) at partner university
Master Thesis Project (30 ECTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel or the Universiteit Gent.
- Mobility Track 2:
Compulsory Course (4 ECTS), Photonics-related Electives (8 ECTS), Multidisciplinary Electives (at least 10 ECTS), Free Electives (no more than 8 ECTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel or the Universiteit Gent.
Master Thesis Project (30 ECTS) at one of the associated partner universities.
- Mobility Track 3:
Course Package (30 ECTS) and Master Thesis Project (30 ECTS) both at one of the associated partner universities.
- Mobility Track 4:
Compulsory Course (4 ECTS), Photonics-related Electives (4ECTS), Multidisciplinary Electives (at least 6 ECTS), Free E lectives (no more than 6 ECTS) and Master Thesis Project (30 ECTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel or the Universiteit Gent.
International Internship (10 ECTS) in a company or scientific institute outside Belgium.
- Mobility Track 5: Compulsory Course (4 ECTS), Photonics-related Electives (16 ECTS), Multidisciplinary Electives (at least 4 ECTS), Free Electives (no more 6 ECTS) and Master Thesis Project (30 ECTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel or the Universiteit Gent. Selection of this track is subject to specific admission requirements.
In total, this academic plan comprises 120 study points.

Common General Compulsory Courses 1st year of the full-time model learning track

This module includes the compulsory courses of the 1st year of the model learning track (MA1)
From the courses listed below, students must obtain 52 ECTS credits.

General compulsory courses in the 2nd year of the model learning track

In the 2nd year of the model learning track, student must choose one ‘Mobility Track’ out of five possible tracks and successfully accomplish the general courses related to the choosen track.

Students who choose Mobility Track 1 must successfully accomplish 30 ECTS of courses at one of these associated partners:
- Lund University: specialization in Biophotonics
- St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics: specialization in Optical Design
- ICFO – BarcelonaTECH Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya: specialization in Optical Engineering
- Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (Denmark): specialization in Optical Telecommunication

The selection of the student must always be approved by the faculty. Prior to subscribing to these external courses, the student must contact the faculty secretariat that will add the selected and approved external courses to the student’s individual requirements.

In Mobility Track 1 the Master Thesis must be carried out at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel or at the Universiteit Gent (supra ‘Master Thesis Project’).

Remark: Do not subscribe to the ‘External Course (75 credits)’ which is only mentioned as an example.

Elective Courses

In the 1st year of the model learning track (MA1) all students, regardless the Mobility Track they will choose in the 2nd year of the model learning track (MA2), have to accomplish a number of photonics-related elective courses.


Students in Mobility Track 2, Mobility Track 4 and Mobility Track 5, must also accomplish additional photonics-related electives, multidisciplinary electives and free electives in the 2nd year of the model learning track (MA2).

Photonics-related Electives

This module includes the photonics-related electives.

Students in Mobility Track 1 must successfully accomplish at least 8 ECTS from this list in the 1st year (MA1) (8 ECTS + 0 ECTS).

Students in Mobility Track 2 must successfully accomplish at least 8 ECTS from this list in the 1st year (MA1) and also at least 8 ECTS from this list in the 2nd year (MA2) (8 ECTS + 8 ECTS).

Students in Mobility Track 3 must successfully accomplish at least 8 ECTS from this list in the 1st year (MA1) (8 ECTS + 0 ECTS).

Students in Mobility Track 4 must successfully accomplish at least 8 ECTS from this list in the 1st year (MA1) and also at least 4 ECTS from this list in the 2nd year (MA2) (8 ECTS + 4 ECTS).

Students in Mobility Track 5 must successfully accomplish at least 8 ECTS from this list in the 1st year (MA1) and also at least 16 ECTS from this list in the 2nd year (MA2) (8 ECTS + 16 ECTS).

Multidisciplinary Electives

Students in Mobility Track 1 and Mobility Track 3 do not have to subscribe to multidisciplinary courses.

Students in Mobility Track 2 have to subscribe to at least 10 ECTS of multidisciplinary electives in the 2nd year of the model learning track (MA2).

Students in Mobility Track 4 have to subscribe to at least 6 ECTS of multidisciplinary electives in the 2nd year of the model learning track (MA2).

Students in Mobility Track 5 have to subscribe to at least 4 ECTS of multidisciplinary electives in the 2nd year of the model learning track (MA2).

These multidisciplinary electives can be chosen from the engineering master programmes of the Faculty of Engineering of the VUB or from the master programmes of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the Universiteit Gent. From the VUB course catalog, only engineering master level courses for regular students (course catalog number starting with '4' and ending with 'R') are eligible. Of course students must choose other courses than those already compulsory within this master or already selected from the module of photonics-related electives.

Free Electives

Students in Mobility Track 1 and Mobility Track 3 do not have to subscribe to free courses.

These free electives can be chosen from the master programmes of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (course catalog number starting with '4' and ending with 'R') or the Universiteit Gent. Of course students must choose other courses than those already compulsory within this master or already selected from the module of photonics-related electives or multidisciplinary electives.

Master Thesis Project - 2nd year of the model learning track

In the 2nd year of the model learning track, students must successfully accomplish a Master Thesis Project. During the Master Thesis Project, the students are embedded in a research environment and are exposed to its culture and its attitudes.
