exhibition

From Friday the 13th of November to Saturday the 21st, a visual sociology on the Cyprus Problem will be exhibited in Nicosia, the country's capital. 20 photographs will be exhibited for a week in the Home for Cooperation, situated in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia, opposite Ledra Palace.

These photographs, taken in the southern part of Cyprus, investigate the monuments, landmarks, and statues that are part of the everyday life of Greek Cypriots. “The statues are vehicles of communication. They are vehicles of ideology, and of information”, explains the VUB professor and photographer Nico Carpentier.

The pictures were taken during the researcher/photographer’s stay on the island, from September of 2013 to September 2014. The project moves away from traditional academic texts to examine and analyse complicated social phenomena, such as those produced by the political situation in Cyprus. Two debates will be organised during the exhibition to stimulate further dialogue: “Monuments and memories" by the Association for Historical Dialogue & Research (AHDR) and on “Covering the Cyprus conflict” by the Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC).

The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, November 13th, at 19:00. The exhibition will be open to the public from the 14th until the 21st of November. More information can be obtained from Eva Giannoukou, a member of the organising team, and at the exhibition website.
