Lunch session

Does funding for military research really help the economy? Can we prevent aggressive regimes from getting hold of dangerous technologies? And should we ban research on killer robots? Questions like these have become urgent in recent months: the EU has announced a funding scheme for military research, the Flemish government has been struggling to decide which new fighter jets to buy, and the US has announced new sanctions on Iran over the latter’s nuclear programme. What is the role of researchers in these questions? In this session, researchers will receive practical advice and ideas, and we will also hear about the policy background to dual use and military research funding.

Presentations:

  • Alu Cataldo (Brussels Service for Export Control): Rules for dual use export control in the Brussels region
  • Diederik Cops (Flemish Peace Institute): Challenges for funding and support of dual use and military research
  • Maaike Verbruggen (Institute of European Studies): Regulation and control of autonomous weapons systems
  • Zafer Kizilkaya (Political Science): The culture of ethics and responsibility in the use of new technologies in the military, and implications for training soldiers and officers.
